  The internal medicine subspecialty of cardiology deals with the heart and the circulation which make up the vast system of blood vessels that supply vital nutrients to each and every organ and cell in the body.

  Each and every part of the heart and the network of vessels can be afflicted by disease. In addition, diseases of the cardiovascular system can affect the function of other vital organs such as the brain, lungs, and kidneys. In turn, diseases of other organs can affect the function of the heart and the circulation. Examples of such conditions include kidney diseases, anemia, overactive and underactive thyroid gland, and lung diseases.
