Travel Medicine

Thomas Hospital Internal Medicine Clinic's Travel Clinic is now accepting new patients who plan to travel internationally and domestically. The clinic aims to promote the well-being of travelers by providing pre-travel consultations, vaccinations, preventative medications and post-travel care for various travel-related illnesses and conditions.

The medical staff will help travelers 18 years and older prepare for a safe and healthy journey by utilizing Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, World Health Organization and the U.S. State Department resources. Patients will receive customized health consultations according to their itinerary, planned activities and medical history.

Consultations will include but are not limited to:

  • Immunizations
  • Preventative medicine guidance
  • Hygiene practices
  • Food/water precautions
  • Insect precautions
  • Resources for medical care in the countries travelers will be visiting

The Travel Medicine Clinic offers a variety of routine and travel-related immunizations for preventable diseases transmitted through the air, by mosquitoes, in food and water, by rabid animals and by blood and bodily fluids. The clinic is recognized by the CDC as a yellow fever vaccination clinic. Once the appropriate immunizations have been administered on-site, travelers will receive a certificate of vaccination, which may be necessary for entry into certain foreign countries.

The Travel Clinic staff includes nurses, medical residents and clinical pharmacists trained to provide immunizations and travel health education. Medical direction for the travel clinic is provided by Holly Pursley, MD, board-certified internal medicine physician, and Cherie L. Abernathy PharmD, antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist specializing in comprehensive international travel medicine.
